MATCH REPORT
Northallerton Town 2 Jarrow Roofing 2
Arngrove Northern League Division 1
Saturday 05 April 2008
At the crunch time of the season, and what many Town fans saw as an easy 3 points today, Town threw the game away. It started very well however as the Jarrow defence wobbled. Earl scored an overhead from 6 yards out, even though the Jarrow defenders were sure there was a hand ball given. 2 minutes later, Jos DeSilva scored a screamer from 25 yards out as the Jarrow keeper mis-kicked and paid the ultimate penalty. 2-0 after five minutes and everything looked comfortable. Lee Court missed two good chances to his frustration and it looked like a case of how many. However, as is the rollercoaster ride being a Northallerton fan, Jarrow came back after a horrible mix up between Bettson and Payne, and Thompson profited for Jarrow and cooly slotted past the oncoming Wolfe. After half time the nerves were getting to the players as they tried to push for the decisive third goal. McQueenie and Court went close, but the performance for 30 minutes was a contender for the worst of the season. Toman came on to try and restore some calm, however with the very last kick of the game a cross came in from the byline, and although Payne looked to be tight on Jarrow striker Logan, he somehow turned and stabbed a shot in to the top corner. Payne was gutted and left his face in the ground. However, if you are an optimist, Town climbed out of the relegation zone for the first time in 2 months, and have games in hand over Washington and Bishop Auckland. The key is getting points from these games, but Town are still favourites to stay up. Whitley Bay on Thursday - Town seem to play better against the good teams, and the Bay have to play on Tuesday as well, so it is arguably a good time to play them.
