| After looking at the team sheet everyone wondered which Town were going to turn up today, and it was not a good start. After a minute the ball went through Harmsworth's legs and Cockburn shrugged off a tackle from Jancowicz to chip the oncoming Norton (1-0). It wasn't to get any better for Town, just 2 minutes later Ashington had a corner which was swung in and no-one seemed to want to clear the ball. Norton missed an opportunity to catch, Barker had an air-shot and Cockburn was the first to react and prodded home from 6 yards (2-0). After this though, Town rallied and really came back in to the game. Danny Earl had a one-on-one with the Ashington keeper but the keeper made an excellent double save. Minutes after this Earl was in again, turned the keeper but, unluckily, the ball bobbled as he was about to slot in from 6 yards. Ashington had more chances and probably should have made the game safe, but Town got to half-time only 2 goals down. After half-time, Town came back, played with spirit, and had the better of the game. However it was Ashington who nearly scored again through the lively Cockburn, who was denied by an excellent stop from Norton. Ashington became nervy and began to gift Town free kicks in dangerous areas. This was soon to result in Town's goal when Holbrook scored an excellent free kick to set up a nervy finish for Ashington (2-1).
Northallerton however could not capitalise and Ashington defended to the death to take 3 valuable points. A mention for two players, Danny Earl and Paul Hinton. Hinton was excellent in midfield today and kept them together very well. He showed grit and determination to come back from a nasty tackle half way through the second half and played very well. Earl was excellent as well, getting in the right positions even though his finishing deserted him today. Town played with spirit but unfortunately it was the two goals in three minutes that were their downfall. Next week we play Formby in the FA Vase, and Town need to play better than they did today to progress. |
