MATCH REPORT
Northallerton Town 4 Squires Gate 3
FA Vase 2nd Round Replay
Wednesday 21 November 2007
Town emerged from this roller coaster match with hard a earned victory to put them through to meet Formby FC in the 3rd Round on December 8th. The visitors took the lead on 9 minutes as Town were slow out of the traps and failed to get in tackles on the edge of the box and Lee Catlow scored (0-1). Town pulled themselves round when on 13 minutes Luke Bythway put Town on level terms (1-1). The joy was shortlived as Town's midfield were struggling to compete and the visitors pushed hard and were rewarded on 17 minutes when a free kick was dropped by Jack Norton and Gate were in front again (1-2). At this point things were looking bad as Town were unable to stop the flood of crosses coming in, it only looked a matter of time before we conceded again, but credit to the lads they stuck with it and were level on 44 minutes from a Luke Bythway corner as the ball hit the net direct(HT 2-2). The second half was even affair with Town breaking well with Anthony Hume leading from the front. There was a short delay with a minor floodlight problem. From the restart Town came on strong and on 78 minutes Paul Hinton's near post header put Town in front again (3-2). The visitors were not about to lie down though and they levelled again on 81 minutes when a right wing cross was parried by Norton and the ball fell to the unmarked Catlow on the edge of the box, who was given time and space to find the net (3-3). As extra time loomed both sides became really nervous and it was Town who looked the stronger and when a Danny Earl run and shot hit the post and ran to safety. It looked odds on for extra time, but the outstanding Anthony Hume was having none of it, the ball came into the box Hume's first effort was blocked but as he lay prone on the ground he stuck out a leg and and got the vital winner (4-3). The final whistle came very quickly after the goal for a fine result, the performance may have lacked some of the finer points including lack of pressure on the player in possession, we conceded too many crosses and put far to much pressure on the defence. In fairness to Andy Toman, he had to play 5 centre forwards which does not help and he recognised the problems after the game, he is confident of some more new faces joining shortly. Town need to put some of this form into the league results starting on Saturday at home to Synners.
