| Town went down to a second heavy defeat in a week as they were beaten 4-0 by current champions Whitley Bay. Town could not cope with the height, strength and experience of the home side. This, sadly, was a similar display to the Seaham game with poor defensive marking, no creativity from midfield and only Luke Bythway causing the Bay defence any problems. Town fell behind on 15 minutes when a defensive mistake left the dangerous Paul Chow with a simple tap in. Luke Bythway came close to scoring on 28 minutes when a rasping drive from a 25 yard free kick was well held by the keeper. It was Luke who again tried his luck from 20 yards on 30 minutes this time just missing the target. These were Town's best efforts of the first half as we struggled with the home side's physical presence (HT 1-0). Andy Toman made two changes for the second half, Holbrook and Butterworth replacing Dodsworth and McNicol, the manager clearly trying to inject some control in midfield. However on 52 minutes, Woodhouse was allowed to break down the right and cut infield across the edge of the area unchallenged and strike the ball under the diving keeper Norton (2-0). Town held onto Bay's coatails as the home side had two more glorious chances to extend their lead but contrived to miss them both. However on 75 minutes a corner found Bay's centre half free in the box, his shot was kicked off the line only for Chow to accept another gift (3-0). Town made it even worse on 88 minutes when a free kick was floated to the edge of the box past three defenders for another soft, close range, tap in (FT 4-0). Despite the best efforts of Chris Walker in defence, Town simply did not have the arial power to compete with Whitley Bay, Andy Toman will be pointing to the lack of ball retention which caused constant problems for his side and looking for immediate improvement. |
