(Reporter Martin Collins)
North Riding Senior Cup Quarter Final
In the first minute Carl Chillingsworth was booked for a foul and this set the tone for the rest of the game as the referee went on to caution 3 Town players and 9 visiting players , but this gives the wrong impression of a game where both teams tried to play football on a heavy pitch. Stuart Hardy's superb through ball freed Steve Allison who rounded the keeper before slotting home to give Town a 1-0 lead. Town created further chances as they went on to dominate the half but just before half time Scarborough enjoyed their best spell , Grant Hickman cleared off the line but in the same phase of play a 30 yard strike brought the visitors level. H T 1-1
Northallerton started the second half superbly and a 5 man passing move ended with Nick Lyons curling the ball into the bottom corner on 47 minutes to restore Town's lead and on 51 minutes Richard Thompson fired in from 25 yards to make it 3-1 , but his most telling contribution of the game was still to come. The visiting fans were getting frustrated with the referee as he booked Scarborough players on a regular basis. On 81 minutes with little sign of a Scarborough comeback the ground was plunged into darkness as the floodlights failed. Tommo joined "Big Phil" to work on the electrics and after a 20 minute delay light was restored. The break seemed to benefit the visitors who enjoyed good possession but a second yellow card for one of their defenders saw them reduced to 10 men for the last 5 minutes and Town comfortably saw out the rest of the game to earn a 3-1 win. It is a shame that people were left discussing the referee's performance instead of the great performance of the Northallerton team.It would have been impossible to pick a man of the match but his performance combined with fixing the floodlights earned Richard Thompson the award.
Town have been rewarded with a home tie against York City in the semi-finals.
