MATCH REPORT
Northallerton Town 3-0 Birtley Town
STL Northern League Division 2
Saturday 05 September 2009
Northallerton recorded a comfortable win against Birtley Town on Saturday against a team who only had 3 points on the board before the game and were looking to improve on their poor start to the season. Town started much the better side, dominating the game and passing the ball around very well, and were rewarded with having the better chances. Butterworth only had the keeper to beat when he found himself in an acre of space, however his shot was brillianly saved by the Birtley 'keeper. Thomspon also looked dangerous on the right hand side and created a couple of half chances which went over the bar. Allison also had a couple of chances but couldn't finish. Birtley then began to get in to the game and created a few chances, which were saved well by Kell. Town deservedly took the lead though on the counter attack when Mitchell picked up the ball, beat a defender then brilliantly rounded the 'keeper, to slip the ball in to an empty net. After this though Birtley had their best spell of the game. They were restricted to mainly long shots though as the defence held firm. Kell though made some fantastic stops, including a good header that was going in to the bottom corner and a few comfortable long range efforts. However he did pull off a fantastic double save when a long range effort was parried, but he got up well and saved the rebound from 8 yards. (HT 1-0) After half time Town regained their strangle-hold on the game and created the better of the chances. Mitchell made it two-nil after 55 minutes, when he won a penalty on the edge of the box after he was pulled back. He dusted himself off and sent the Birtley 'keeper the wrong way to make it 2-0. Smurthwaite could have made it 3-0 after a swift counter attack, when substitute Woodhouse beat a defender well and squared the ball, but couldn't quite get there and subsequently fired over from 6 yards out. A few minutes later though Town did make it 3-0 after a corner. Most Town players appeared to think that a header went over the line, however Butterworth erased any doubt when he collected the ball from 30 yards out and duly struck the ball in to the top left hand corner. It truly was an early contender for goal of the season and capped off what was a good performance by Town. Smurthwaite and Butterworth bossed the game in midfield, but Kell gets man of the match for a string of great saves in the first half that kept us in it. It was a first clean sheet for Town in a long time and the early signs are encouraging for the side, who will hope they can continue in to the next few games as some difficult fixtures are up ahead. We are away at Northern League new boys Gilford Park next week, who come from Carlisle. The club are running a coach to the game at the price of just £10. Spaces however are very limited so if you want a seat contact any committee member as soon as possible.
