MATCH REPORT
Northallerton Town 0 Whitley Bay 2
STL Northern League Division 1
Wednesday 29 April 2009
Northallerton restored parity after Saturday's abysmal performance against Bishop Auckland, even though they were beaten 2-0 by Whitley Bay. Town fielded a vastly different team from Saturday, and included Andrew Ramsbottom and Ed Craven for rare starts. Hickman also got a chance and Allison played up front with Hodgson. Whitley Bay obviously had an eye on their trip to Wembley which is a week on Sunday, and only started 4 of their full 11. Never the less, Whitley Bay are a class outfit. However, Town matched them all the way in the first half, and were able to cope with Bay's flowing passing play, and the centrebacks Hickman and Smurfwaite coped really well with the threat of Paul Chow up front, limiting them to only a few half chances. Town also tried to play some attractive football, which made it an decent game to watch. Town might even have got an undeserved lead when Allison shot over before half time. (HT 0-0) The second half was a different story though, and Whitley Bays quality started to show. There was relentless pressure on the Town goal, and the goal was always coming. Robinson scored for Whitley Bay after 65 minutes with a fantastic strike from the edge of the box. Allison could have levelled for Town but his close range shot went straight at the Bay 'keeper. Bay's style of football made Town tire, and eventually they got the killer goal when Adam Johnson capitalised on an error on the half way line to beat the oncoming Clements. Tonights game was a massive improvement on Saturdays atrocity, and the players should be pleased with their efforts. The lads that came in played well and hopefully we can finish the season with a win on Saturday, away at Sunderland Nissan. Many players could have been given MOM as it was a great team performance, however it has to go to Smurthwaite for what was an excellent performance at centre back.
