Northallerton Town 1 - 5 Bishop Auckland |
| STL Northern League Division 1 |
| Saturday 25 April 2009 |
|
| Northallerton were relegated from the Northern League first division after a woeful performance against Bishop Auckland, who were only one place above. Bishop's trouncing completed what has been a houdini-style escape from relegation. It started badly for Northallerton when Henson scored with a fantastic strike from 25 yards which beat Clements. It got worse for Town after 20 minutes, when Bishops relentless pressure turned in to another goal. Steve Salvin met a cross by Purewal, who couldn't miss from 8 yards. Northallerton started to find their feet, and got a goal back with a 20 yard effort from Steven Allison. Town had more efforts from Allison and Poole saved and looked like they might get something from the game at half time (HT 2-1) However, in the second half Town were quite frankly awful, and conceded three soft goals that saw the side relegated. After an hour Bishops scored against the run of play when Smirthwaite played a sloppy backpass to Clements that didn't reach it's target, and Steve Salvin took advantage to score. After this the game was over as a contest, as the Town players appeared to give up all hope. Henson scored from the half way line after a sloppy clearance by Clements and then completed his hat trick a couple of minutes from the end when he scored off the rebound after a fantastic Clements save. The only saving grace for Town is that if we finish third bottom we could be reprieved because of Morpeth's ground, however at the moment even third bottom is unlikely. |
