Bedlington Terriers 3 - 2 Northallerton Town |
| STL Northern League Division 1 |
| Saturday 18 April 2009 |
|
| Luckless Northallerton made it 3 games without a win at Bedlington today, despite a good performance by everyone in a Town shirt. Town took an early lead when Steven Allison pounced on a defensive error to take the ball off the keeper and slot in from a narrow angle. Bedlingtons reply was decent and equalised only a few minutes later Lawson turned Smurthwaite inside out and beat Clements with a low shot. Northallerton replied well though, and Chillingsworth put the visitors in front again with a well struck volley from the penalty spot on the half hour mark. Bedlington then put the pressure on the vistors and got an equaliser 5 minutes before half time with a fantastic free kick from McAlindon from 25 yards out left Clements with no chance. (HT 2-2) The second half saw the visitors putting relentless pressure on the Terriers goal for long periods, however Town just couldn't score. Chillingsworth had two excellent opportunities to grab a winner: his first effort a one-on-one that beat the keeper but not the far post, and the second a free header that was hit straight at the Bedlington keeper. Football can be a cruel game, and Bedlington got an undeserved, controversial runner. Scott Bell hand-balled to control the ball and then fed the ball through to Nicholson who beat Clements. Mark Fanning was then sent to the stands for an onslaught of abuse towards the assistant referee, and will probably pick up a touchline ban. Town were unlucky again, and time is running out to pick up some results. Next week's game against Bishop Auckland is as big as it can possibly get, if we don't win that will probably just about send us down, but lets get behind the lads who just might pull off the houdini-style escape of last season. |
