Northallerton Town 2 - 4 Sunderland Nissan |
| STL Northern League Division 1 |
| Saturday 11 April 2009 |

| Northallerton went in to this game thinking that a point would be a fantastic result against Nissan who are in decent form, however it could have been so much more. Town started marginally better but Nissan had the better of the early chances, with a couple of shots going just wide and Clements making two sharp stops. However, Caley could have scored a minute later but his shot was stopped well by the Nissan keeper, and only some fantastic defending stopped him from nodding in the rebound. This chance wasn't to be rued though, as O'Riordan pulled across a fantastic ball for Chillingsworth to head home at the first half after about 25 minutes. This woke Nissan up and they looked a bit more dangerous and could have scored on numerous occasions, but Town had keeper Clements to thank to keep the lead at half time. In spite of this Town had a good chance to get a two goal cushion but his well struck volley was saved well again by the Nissan keeper. (HT 1-0) Nissan came out after the break with renewed vigour and their pressure told after 10 minutes in the second half when a free kick left a Nissan player free at the back post to score. Northallertons reply however was fantastic, and some another great ball from O'Riordan was nodded in at the back post by Chillingsworth to put Town 2-1 up. The reply from Nissan was clinical and immediate when a ball from the right was finished from 10 yards out. Town looked to be cruising towards a point, and it could have even been more, a looping header from Chillingsworth (who else) looked to be looping over the keeper but it was saved well. It was then Town were rattled from a very very very questionable decision by the referee, when Clements was ajudged to have brought down Masters, but it was clear that the keeper took the ball first. The spot kick was gratefully dispatched to make it 3-2. Nissan then got another a minute or so from time when a mix up between Clements and Smurfwaite allowed Masters to sneak in and score, although it looked like Masters hand-balled in the build up.
This was a very decent performance against a high flying Nissan, and Town definately deserved a point from the game at least, but on this occasion the referee got the two big decisions wrong. The whole team played well today, especially Clements who kept us in the game on numerous occasions, and O'Riordan and Farrington on the left hand side played very well. MOTM for me today goes to Chilly for what was an excellent performance. The lads from Darlington played well also, especially Caley who played up front, Hickman also played well on his debut. If Town play like this on Monday we will win, in what is a critical game at Penrith. |
