Ryton 5 - 2 Northallerton Town |

| Town went in to this game with renewed optimism after a fantastic victory in midweek at Morpeth, however our inconsistency continued, going down 5-2 at overachievers Ryton. The wind made the game a complete farce, blowing a strong gale diagonally across the pitch. Town had the wind advantage in the first half, and had the early pressure, but it was Ryton who went ahead after some slick passing was finished off from 12 yards. Town looked to be coming back in to the game, having all the pressure on the Ryton goal but it was the home side who went two up after some more slick passing ended up with Chris Walker unluckily turning the ball in to his own net. The hardworking Martin O'Riordan got the visitors back in to the game with a fantastic chip from 25 yards. Northallerton then had all of the pressure and were very unlucky not to go in at the break on leisure terms when a McNicol cross/shot hit the bar and was scrambled away from the Ryton goal line. (HT 2-1) The second half was a completely different affair, Ryton had all the pressure, but Town were always in the game at 2-1. Clements kept Town at 2-1 on numerous occasions, making 3 excellent saves. However, the inevitable did come after an hour when a Marron corner found a completely unmarked Ryton head to head home, although there was controversy as it wasn't clear whether the ball had crossed the line. After this it was all Ryton, another fantastic passing move put them 4-1 up before a Clements error gifted Ryton the fifth. Northallerton grabbed a late consolation with a comical own goal caused by the Ryton keeper. Huge disappointment was felt amongst the Town contingent after this performance, some players will say they could have done better, but Ryton played some great football in what were farcical conditions. Marty O'Riordan picks up the MOM for a hardworking performance, his wing play set up numerous chances and he gave absolutely everything until the final whistle. Another downside today is that South Shields moved away from the dropzone, and Bishop Auckland beat Seaham to move level on points with Town. Next week we are at home to Sunderland Nissan - a tough game but there is always a possibility of picking up three points. |
