What a spirited, determined, positive performance this was. Town were unregognisable from the shambolic Ashington performance. New Boss Mark Fanning has brought in 8 new faces since his appointment on Saturday evening, however don't be fooled by that statement, only Ian Smirthwaite was new to the side from Saturday. This gritty display was down to player attitude and application along with a higher level of organisation. The home side were big and powerful, constantly bombarding our box with crosses, but I have not seen us win as much second ball all season, with Martin Butterworth battling from central midfield, Smirthwaite and Jacko in central defence, we looked solid and Chilly up front was again excellent. Town's first goal came on 28 mins when Scott McNicol beat three defenders and his shot hit a bobble on the pitch and beat the keeper (0-1). Chilly headed home a lovely goal from a McNicol cross after Town pressure (0-2).
Make no mistake the home side kept coming and goal line clearances by Farrington and Walker from set pieces was proof of the new defensive organisation. Very diificult to pick the MOM with so many good performances but new boy Butterworth in only his second NL game sneaked it with an all action show. |
