West Auckland Town 0 - 1 Northallerton Town |
| STL Northern League Division 1 |
| Saturday 07 March 2009 |
|
Town came out on top of this crucial 6 pointer on Saturday, and the result should have been more comfortable than the scoreline suggests. West started the stronger, Gary Barnes was one on one with Paul Clements after just 20 seconds, but Clements saved brilliantly. After this though it was all Northallerton for long spells of the match. Martin O'Riordan set up Steve Roberts after 12 minutes who finished brilliantly. Tom Burke worked hard as always in midfield, and his reward was to go clear with half-time approaching, but his tame shot went straight in to the grateful Wests' keepers arms.
After the break West Auckland came out all guns blazing, but Northallerton's 3 man defence of Campbell, Crossman and Jackson stood firm. Chillingsworth gave a workmanlike performance up front as usual, however he will no doubt be disappointed he didn't get on the scoresheet himself. He turned a West Auckland defender 25 yards out and hit it on the volley. The keeper stood still but the ball somehow went wide. He then could have finished it off a minute later but he couldn't put away a free header from 8 yards out. After this West applied constant pressure to the North' goal without creating any real opportunities. It was a nervous last 10 minutes but North' held on for a vital three points.
A typical Northern League game with plenty of hard tackles and passion. Gary Shardha was my man of the match today, he continued his recent good form with a brilliant display in midfield, he was everywhere and his distribution was excellent. Every player did their job today, and they will need to do the same on Saturday in another crucial game against Seaham Red Star. |
