Town started today's game without a recognised keeper, Wednesday night's hero Paul Clements was away on a coaching course with Tom Burke so midfielder Steve Roberts was between the sticks and how well did he do?
Town were ahead on six minutes when Chilly scored after Campbell's header came back off the post (1-0). Town scored again inside twelve minutes when Ross Hodgson playing in his favourite stiker role got an amazing goal. The ball came over his right shoulder from a high cross, Hodgy puleed down and guided it past former Town keeper Bishop (2-0). Six minutes later the visitors were back in it when stand in keeper Roberts could do nothing about a twenty yard piledriver into the top right corner (2-1). Town were vulnerable now, perhaps recent performances were on their mind and they were punished again for slack defending (HT 2-2). The Lawyers came out fighting and for a while Town had to defend resolutely, Newall in particular did well on his full return from injury. Town weathered the storm and came back again with Shardha & McNicoll working tirelessley for the team. Town were rewarded for their efforts when Chilly was barged over in the box and he stepped up to score the penalty (3-2). Then manager Speight brought on sub Gareth Williams and with virtually his first touch of the ball sent a wonderful lob over the advancing keeper from twenty five yards (FT 4-2).
What a differance three days make in football, this performance was so much better than at Bishops, it's hard to believe it was the same team. Hodgson worked well with Chilly up front, Shardha ran his socks off,
Newall and Jackson worked well together in central defence. It was hard to pick a MOM today but Newall just shaded it with Roberts making a few excellent saves. Now can we carry this forward to Consett on Wednesday.
