Ashington AFC 3-1 Northallerton Town |
| STL Northern League Division 1 |

| Northallerton made the long journey up to Ashington and were disappointed and came away with nothing. Ashington were easily the better side in the first half as Cockburn was causing havok on the right hand side for Ashington. Town did restrict them to long shots though and Bainbridge was the only one to go close for the home side in the first half when his long range effort beat Barford and struck the crossbar. Town had the best effort of the half though as the young Ashington keeper made a glaring mistake and Radu could not get on top of the ball and his volley went over the keeper, but not under the crossbar. Ashington then made Town pay when Bainbridges delightful chip was turned in by McAndrew. HT 1-0.
Town came out second half with a renewed vigour, and looked capable of scoring an equaliser. Sharda came on for the injured Newall and caused a real threat on the left hand side. He crossed in a ball to Chillingsworth, but his volley was saved brilliantly by the keeper. Roberts then went close, much to the despair of Dawson and Speight. Ashington went down the other end and some slack defending allowed Cockburn to sneak in at the far post from a long throw in for a tap in. Ashington then scored again after Barford made an excellent save from Bainbridge, but unluckily the ball fell to Rayner to finish off Town. Town did get a consolation 15 minutes from time when Gary Sharda made an excellent run, beating 4 Ashington players before chipping the ball over the oncoming Ashington keeper. Town then had a Chillingsworth effort controversially ruled out for offside. 3-1 was how it finished. Town could have beaten a lot of sides on todays preformance but came up against an Ashington side that were hungry, and they deserved their victory. Purcifer had a good game at the back as did Jackson, and Chris Walker dealt with McAndrew on the left very well. However we did miss the suspended Clarke and Joseph today, and they will be back for the League Cup game in midweek along with John Ryan. |
